07 Jan Coming Soon Technology: SurroSense Rx
Alpine Foot & Ankle Clinic is one of the few clinics that will be offering SurroSense Rx in the near future.
Orpyx Medical Technologies, based in Calgary, AB, has developed a wireless shoe insert that will help people with Diabetes manage peripheral nerve damage and hopefully prevent amputations that often stem from Diabetic Foot Ulcers.
“Many cases (of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy) are because people have no idea of the pressure they’re putting on their feet,” said Amanda Hehr, vice president of marketing at Orpyx, in a recent news release.
The SurroSense Rx insole will collect data of where wearers are putting pressure on their feet. The sensor will wirelessly transmit data to a wristwatch or smartphone, alerting users that they might be putting too much pressure on their heels and risking numb feet that can lead to ulcers.
Orpyx also suggests more than 60 per cent of Diabetic patients will suffer from foot numbness, and the inability to feel pain is a leading cause of ulceration and eventually amputation. Prevention can reduce the risk of amputation by as much as 85 per cent.
“We helped trial the devices out in the earlier stages and we are happy to see the amazing progress they have made in developing this product. This truly will help those suffering from peripheral neuropathy to better protect their feet and reduce their risk of amputation.” says Dr. Lalani.
